QE11 Olympic Park
To mark the Centenary of Armistice Day artist Rob Heard began an enormous challenge to cut 12inch wooden figures, individually wrapped and bound in a hand-stitched shroud, each one linked and named to a fatality at the Somme. This 4000sqm display of bodies laid out in rows illustrates the true impact of the conflict and represents the 72,396 British and Commonwealth servicemen who made the ultimate sacrifice and depicts the enormity of the loss of life and the men who never came home. This poignant and provocative experience to Shrouds of the Somme includes an aerial view from the top of the ArcelorMittal Orbit, free time to walk around the outdoor installation and culminates with afternoon tea at a nearby hotel.
