In 1858 the long hot summer became the Great Stink as raw sewage from the growing city emptied into the Thames turning into an open sewer. Something had to be done and this led to one of the most remarkable feats of civil engineering ever seen. Visit Sir Joseph Bazalgette’s Cathedral of Sewage – The Crossness Treatment Works at Bexley – where the finest Victorian ornamental cast ironwork can be seen and discover how the Victorians disposed of the city’s raw sewage. Your day starts with guided city tour – part walking and part coach – revealing the story of “spending a penny”, then cruise from Westminster to maritime Greenwich. Bring a picnic or buy refreshments on board as you glide by the famous landmarks along the Thames. You then reboard the coach for your transfer to the amazing Grade I listed Crossness. This interesting and well planned day includes tea and biscuits, a guided tour, Thames cruise and visit to the amazing Crossness.
